The French Line was built by Compagnie Generale de Geophysique (CGG) Party S6507 in 1963 to afford access for the men and machinery needed to conduct the search for oil in the South Australian dunefields.

The teepees on the stylised map above shows the approximate positions of the CGG campsites along the French Line, beginning on Spring Creek and ending near Erabena turnoff. CGG's original road was carried on 25km past Poeppels Corner before the party headed NNW into the Channel Country to begin their Queensland oil search campaign.
